Qi Long, of the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania, will present:

“Health Data Science in Action: The Power and Promise of Statistical and Machine Learning”

Abstract: Rapid advances in technology have enabled generation of enormous amounts of health data such as -omics data, electronic health records (EHRs) data, mobile health (mHealth) data, and imaging data in research studies and as part of healthcare delivery. Such rich, yet complex data offer remarkable opportunities for transforming public health and medicine and, at the same time, present significant analytical challenges. To address these challenges, health data science, an emerging interdisciplinary field, has made great strides in recent years. In this talk, I will share our research group’s journey in developing and applying innovative statistical and machine learning methods for complex health data—including -omics data, EHRs data and mHealth data—to advance precision health and population health. Our experiences demonstrate the significant roles of Biostatistics in health data science, and suggest that building on the core principles of statistical thinking a multi-disciplinary, team science approach offers great promises to accelerate innovation and fully harness the power of ever-growing health data for tackling complex real-world problems in public health and medicine.

Refreshments will be served prior to the seminar. All are Welcome.
