Association of CDC Opioid Prescription Guidelines for Chronic Pain and Health Coverage: Policy Changes on Opioid Prescribing Behavior Across Different Provider Specialties

Opioid prescribing practices vary across provider specialties. CDC guidelines and health payer pharmacy coverage changes were released to help guide and modify provider opioid prescribing behavior. To better understand the association between these guideline and pharmacy coverage changes with changes opioid prescribing behavior across different provider specialties, we evaluated three CDC guidelines and two pharmacy coverage changes. The study also examines how patient’s insurance types and location in a rural or urban primary care service area is associated with provider uptake of the CDC guidelines and payer pharmacy coverage changes.
