Abstract: Public health education is at an inflection point. Nationally, 12% of the governmental public health workforce has a degree in public health. Yet, in 2019, over 36,500 students received a public health degree. This presentation will focus on where students go post-graduation, earnings and debt associated with their education, and whether and how COVID-19 and the economic downturn has impacted the field’s prospects. The presentation will also examine turnover and retirement in the governmental public health workforce, and where newly minted public health graduates can fill vacancies. Data are drawn from large, national workforce studies, administrative data collected by the National Center for Education Statistics, and information is reported from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health.
HPM Seminar Series is sponsored by theĀ Division of Health Policy & Management, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota.
