SUMMARY:Three Ways of Looking at Black/White Mortality Differences in the United States
DESCRIPTION:A basic demographic fact about the United States is that\, on average\, White people live longer than Black people. But what\, concretely\, does this fact mean? Drawing from a diverse set of social science\, health\, and literary sources\, this talk argues that social science research has three families of strategy for making sense of the size of mortality disparities — distribution-based\, action-based\, and meaning-based measures — and provides new empirical results in each vein that collectively aim to put demographic measurement onto a more human footing.

SUMMARY:Firearm Injury in the United States: Facts\, Myths\, and a Public Health Path Forward
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rebecca Cunningham is one of the nation’s leading experts on issues related to firearm injury prevention. Over the past 20 years\, Dr. Cunningham has secured more than $50 million in federal grants to advance evidence-based research projects designed to address the root causes of\, and potential solutions for\, the most important issues involving firearm violence. She served as director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-sponsored Injury Prevention Center at the University of Michigan. Dr. Cunningham also launched the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at Michigan to support and catalyze innovative research and train future generations of scientists to pursue this field of scholarship. She also served as principal investigator on the Firearm Safety Among Children and Teens Consortium\, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health\, which brings together researchers\, practitioners and firearm owners to identify opportunities to reduce youth firearm injuries and deaths.

SUMMARY:BHDS Seminar with Tanya P. Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Robust and Efficient Estimation in the Presence of a Randomly Right-censored Covariate \nPresented by Tanya P. Garcia\nDepartment of Biostatistics\nUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \nIn Huntington’s disease research\, a current goal is to understand how symptoms change prior to a clinical diagnosis. Statistically\, this entails modeling symptom severity as a function of the covariate “time until diagnosis\,” which is often heavily right-censored in observational studies. Existing estimators that handle right-censored covariates have varying statistical efficiency and robustness to misspecified models for nuisance distributions (those of the censored covariate and censoring variable). On one extreme\, complete case estimation\, which utilizes uncensored data only\, is free of nuisance distribution models but discards informative censored observations. On the other extreme\, maximum likelihood estimation is maximally efficient but inconsistent when the covariate’s distribution is misspecified. We propose a new “SPARCC” estimator (for Semi-parametric Right-Censored Covariate) that is robust and efficient. When the nuisance distributions are modeled parametrically\, the SPARCC estimator is doubly robust\, i.e.\, consistent if at least one distribution is correctly specified\, and semiparametric efficient if both models are correctly specified. When the nuisance distributions are estimated consistently via nonparametric or machine learning methods\, the estimator is consistent and semiparametric efficient. We show empirically that the proposed estimator\, implemented in the R package sparcc\, has its claimed properties\, and we apply it to study Huntington’s disease symptom trajectories using data from the Enroll-HD study. \nA seminar tea will be held at 2:45 p.m. in University Office Plaza\, Room 240. All are Welcome.

SUMMARY:From Pain to Podcast to Policy: A Journey in Black Maternal Health Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Brittany Wright-Otero is a maternal health advocate whose near-death birthing experience ignited a passion for systemic change. What began as a personal crisis became a national dialogue on Black maternal health\, ultimately leading her to serve in the Governor’s Children’s Cabinet in the state of Minnesota. \nHer journey started with the Trill Moms Podcast\, a platform where she and other Black mothers shared their stories\, challenges\, and triumphs in motherhood. Through raw and honest conversations\, the podcast became a powerful space for advocacy\, amplifying the voices of Black mothers and shedding light on the systemic failures in maternal healthcare. As her platform grew\, so did her impact—leading to collaborations with healthcare professionals\, grassroots organizers\, and policymakers. \nIn this talk\, Brittany shares her path from personal trauma to public advocacy\, exploring how storytelling\, community action\, and policy change intersect. She dives into the ongoing crisis of Black maternal health disparities and what can be done to drive meaningful change—from supporting local initiatives to influencing state-level policies. Whether you’re a parent\, advocate\, or policymaker\, Brittany’s journey will inspire you to turn pain into purpose and action.

SUMMARY:One health approach to characterizing tick-borne disease risks among outdoor workers
DESCRIPTION:Jacob will be presenting on his collaborative work with the Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety\, Washington County Public Health\, and the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District investigating tick-borne pathogen exposure risks among outdoor workers. SUMMARY:BHDS Plan B Presentation with Losha Ndemeno-Tegomoh
DESCRIPTION:A Comparison of Statistical Methods for Variable Selection Under Competing Risks: Modelling Death Possibly Related to Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Auto Transplantation (TPIAT) \nPresented by Losha Ndemeno-Tegomoh\nMasters Candidate in Biostatistics\nPlan B Adviser: Dr. Anne Eaton \nCompeting risks can arise in survival analysis when the occurrence of one event prevents the occurrence of another. Competing risks should be taken into consideration because\, if ignored\, the presence of a competing risk can bias the results of statistical analysis. The Fine-Gray proportional sub distribution hazards model is a commonly-used method for regression analysis that accounts for the presence of competing risks. Several methods have been proposed for variable selection in Fine-Gray regression. This study used data from 555 participants that have undergone total pancreatectomy with islet auto transplantation (TPIAT) at the University of Minnesota 5 – 20 years ago to investigate three such variable selection methods: stepwise selection based on the BICcr\, a criteria tailored to Fine-Gray regression\, random survival forests\, and LASSO. The event of interest was death possibly related to TPIAT\, with death due to other causes treated as a competing risk. By 15 years post-TPIAT\, 9.2% (95% CI: 0.01%\, 29.5%) of participants experienced death possibly related to TPIAT. Age and pancreatitis duration were significant predictors for the incidence of TPIAT-related death. All variable selection methods identified these variables as among the most important. Multiple variables that were correlated with one another and may be related to pancreas health might also be important predictors for the incidence of TPIAT-related death. Different variable selection methods selected different variables from within this subset. Fibrosis severity level may not correlate with the risk of death related to TPIAT in a linear fashion\, which may explain why it was not identified as important by some variable selection methods.

SUMMARY:Late Effects of Therapy among Survivors of Childhood Cancer: Leveraging “Big Data” to Stratify Risk
DESCRIPTION:Advances in treatments have dramatically improved long-term survival after childhood cancer to >85% in the US. However\, childhood cancer survivors are at increased risk for experiencing severe and life- threatening health conditions as they age as a consequence of cancer therapy. Dr. Cindy Im will discuss potential opportunities to facilitate precision survivorship\, leveraging large epidemiological datasets\, statistical/machine learning-based prediction modeling\, and genetics to improve late effects clinical risk stratification.

SUMMARY:Unexplained Illnesses Associated with a Subscription Meal Service
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, shifting consumer demands have led to changes in the types of foods produced and how consumers obtain them. In 2022\, a subscription-based meal company launched a new line of products. Shortly after\, consumers complained about illness after consumption of one of these products. In this talk\, Dr. Firestone will discuss her epidemiologic analysis of exposure data collected from a novel source – a law firm – in order to identify the food ingredient causing illnesses. She will discuss her study findings and their implications for food safety policies and public health data systems.
