DESCRIPTION:Estimating Interactions in Chemical Mixtures: Case Studies from Cancer Epidemiology \nPresented by Paul S. Albert\nSenior Investigator and Director\nBiostatistics Branch\nDivision of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics\nNational Cancer Institute \nEstimating the interactions between mixture components is often of interest in epidemiologic studies. Motivated by studies examining the effects of chemical exposures in the development of cancer\, we develop and compare different approaches for estimating interactions among components of these exposures. We develop a latent functions approach where the main and interaction effects are estimated using two separate sets of unobserved functions. We also develop a Bayesian shrinkage approach that incorporates the hierarchical principle which assumes that it is unlikely that there are interactions without the presence of corresponding main effects. These approaches are compared with Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and LASSO\, two approaches currently being used for analyzing interactions in chemical mixture studies. We analyze the data from a series of NCI studies to provide insight into chemical mixture analyses. \nThis is joint work with Sung Duk Kim and Debamita Kundu. \nA seminar tea will be held at 9:30 a.m. in University Office Plaza\, Room 240. SUMMARY:BHDS Plan B Presentation with Jiaying Dong
DESCRIPTION:Evaluating Martingale and Counting Process-Based Covariance and Correlation Estimators for Multivariate Survival Data \nPresented by Jiaying Dong\nMasters Candidate in Biostatistics\nPlan B Adviser: Benjamin Langworthy \nEstimating associations between multiple time to event outcomes is an important yet challenging task in survival analysis due to the presence of censoring and competing risks. Traditional measures of correlation and covariance are not valid in this setting. Langworthy et al. [1] proposed a class of time-indexed estimators based on martingale and counting process methods that account for censoring and competing risk and allow for estimations of covariance and correlation between event types. This project evaluates the performance of these estimators through simulation studies and applies them to real world electronic health record data from M Health Fairview Hospital system. \nSimulation scenarios varied by sample size\, censoring level\, time point\, and the presence of competing risks. We accessed bias\, standard deviation\, and coverage probabilities of bootstrap confidence intervals of the estimators. Both estimators performed well with low bias\, stable variance and close to 95% coverage probability. In the clinical data application\, we examined associations between orders for lactic acid testing\, telemetry monitoring and antibiotic administration following clinical deterioration\, using the same estimators. The results demonstrated that these martingale and counting process based estimators can be effectively applied in multivariate survival settings and are capable of handling censoring and competing risks\, making them useful tools for analyzing associations between time to event outcomes.

SUMMARY:Health\, housing\, and media narratives: An overview\, and future directions
DESCRIPTION:Housing is among the most well-established determinants of health and health equity. Yet\, despite this rich and growing literature\, the U.S. housing system continues to expose tens of millions of people to the numerous physical and mental health consequences resulting from inadequate safe\, stable and affordable housing – further entrenching the racist structuring of these health risks. In this presentation\, after sharing an overview of what is currently understood about the housing-health connection. I will discuss emerging research examining media discourse about housing and homelessness\, with an emphasis on how this coverage engages with broader narratives of racial justice and health equity. Next\, I will introduce how tenant organizers fighting the health-harming housing system build power through establishing new narratives that reposition housing not as commodity\, but as critical\, life-affirming public health infrastructure.

However\, significant knowledge gaps exist regarding its harmful effects on non-users. This presentation highlights the public health relevance of hookah tobacco use and secondhand exposure\, with a focus on how the product’s chemical composition may affect non-users.

SUMMARY:Migration Health in Practice: Lessons from Two UMN Programs
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at the Public Health Institute\, this presentation will highlight two University of Minnesota-led projects focused on migration health. One project aimed to build the capacity of healthcare providers abroad and in the U.S. to address the medical needs of migrating refugees\, with the goal of ensuring proper health screenings\, safe arrival\, and a more successful community integration. The second\, the National Resource Center for Refugees\, Immigrants\, and Migrants (NRC-RIM)\, supported the public health needs of these communities after their arrival in the U.S.

DESCRIPTION:Statistical Methods for Efficient Phase I Dose Escalation Trials \nPresented by Chloe Falke\nPh.D. Candidate in Biostatistics\nPh.D. Adviser: Joe Koopmeiners \nPhase I dose escalation studies are first-in-human clinical trials\, often with the primary objective of identifying the treatment’s maximum tolerated dose (MTD). This objective is complicated by the intrinsically limited size and time frame of Phase I clinical trials. In this dissertation we consider two approaches to addressing these challenges from a trial design perspective: Intra-patient dose escalation (IPDE) and MTD estimator selection. \nIPDE allows participants to receive multiple rounds of doses\, greatly increasing the amount of information that can be gathered per participant. However\, existing IPDE methods assume that dosing outcomes are not influenced by prior dosings\, which means carryover in toxicity from one dosing to the next may bias estimation of the MTD. We propose three novel dose escalation algorithms that incorporate carryover toxicity into their statistical models and thus allow for robust MTD estimation\, even when there’s strong carryover effects. \nFor trials that don’t employ IPDE\, we conducted a comparative review of MTD estimators. The MTD estimator used after a trial is frequently chosen to match the statistical model and assumptions of the dose escalation algorithm. We show the flaws with this approach and provide alternative recommendations to ensure MTD estimation is as accurate as possible.

DESCRIPTION:This immersive\, experiential learning opportunity will allow participants to gain a deeper understanding of struggles for justice and systems of oppression in the Twin Cities and how they impact lived experiences today. Reverend Jim Bear Jacobs\, the Founder of Healing Minnesota Stories and Director of Racial Justice for Minnesota Council of Churches\, will use stories to create healing and understanding between Native American and non-native people. Through this session\, participants will learn the stories of genesis and genocide that took place in the sacred valley of Bdote and understand how oppression impacts lived experiences today. \nRegistration is limited with 50 spots available.
