SUMMARY:HPM Seminar with Neil Anthony Lewis\, Jr.\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Mobilizing Diverse Coalitions to Advance Health Equity \nDespite what you may have heard about the “divisive” nature of health equity efforts and other efforts to foster diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, the majority of Americans (as of late January 2025) still have favorable views of such efforts; fewer than one-third report unfavorable views. It seems that\, after living through a pandemic that made salient just how separate and unequal the United States remains in modern life\, Americans are now supportive of the idea that we ought to change the status quo—that we should pursue efforts to improve equity and justice in health and other aspects of society. How can those favorable attitudes be harnessed and turned into actions and policies that can actually improve health equity? That question has guided much of our research over the past several years. In this talk\, Dr. Lewis will share findings from that research\, which has found effective strategies for mobilizing Americans across racial\, ethnic\, and partisan lines to engage in the individual and collective actions required to advance health equity.

SUMMARY:#OwntheOutcome: Holding Companies Accountable for Health
DESCRIPTION:How might public health hold companies accountable for how their products affect human health? In a moment when public health and policy are under duress\, a new argument for how public health might follow up on the war on tobacco – and borrow a page from carbon taxes – to create new frameworks for accountability and action\, especially in industries that create the texture of everyday life (food\, entertainment\, housing and transportation). Thomas points to new arguments for public health and new coalitions that might yield greater human health.

SUMMARY:The Kids Aren’t Alright: Adverse Childhood Experiences and Opportunities to Forge a Healthier Future
DESCRIPTION:Colin Planalp\, Senior Research Fellow at SHADAC\, will discuss adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their pernicious role in undermining the health of both children and adults. He will present data on the prevalence of ACEs across the states and demographic sub-populations\, as well as describing strategies to mitigate the harm of ACEs as an approach to enhancing people’s health and wellbeing.

SUMMARY:BHDS Seminar with Corwin Zigler
DESCRIPTION:Bayesian Causal Inference with Uncertain Physical Process Interference \nPresented by Corwin Zigler\nDepartment of Biostatistics\nBrown University School of Public Health \nCausal inference with spatial environmental data is often challenging due to the presence of interference: outcomes for observational units depend on some combination of local and non-local treatment. This is especially relevant when estimating the effect of power plant emissions controls on population health\, as pollution exposure is dictated by (i) the location of point-source emissions\, as well as (ii) the transport of pollutants across space via dynamic physical-chemical processes. In this work\, we estimate the effectiveness of air quality interventions at coal-fired power plants in reducing two adverse health outcomes in Texas in 2016: pediatric asthma ED visits and Medicare all-cause mortality. We develop methods for causal inference with interference when the underlying network structure is not known with certainty and instead must be estimated from ancillary data. We offer a Bayesian\, spatial mechanistic model for the interference mapping which we combine with a flexible non-parametric outcome model to marginalize estimates of causal effects over uncertainty in the structure of interference. Our analysis finds some evidence that emissions controls at upwind power plants reduce asthma ED visits and all-cause mortality\, however accounting for uncertainty in the interference renders the results largely inconclusive. \nA seminar tea will be held at 2:45 p.m. in University Office Plaza\, Room 240. All are Welcome.

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Understanding the Needs of Ovarian Cancer Survivors
DESCRIPTION:There are more than 250\,000 ovarian cancer survivors in the U.S. and this number is growing. Throughout treatment for this disease\, many patients encounter serious effects\, including physical issues like nausea\, vomiting\, fatigue\, sleep disruptions\, peripheral neuropathy\, hair loss\, and sexual dysfunction\, as well as psychological challenges such as cognitive dysfunction\, fear of recurrence\, anxiety\, and depression. Comprehensively understanding how the prevalence and severity of side effects\, unmet needs\, and barriers to supportive care affect quality of life in diverse ovarian cancer survivors remains a research gap and priority.

SUMMARY:Standing Up for LGBTQIA+ Voices in Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research
DESCRIPTION:Over 3 million adults aged 60+ in the U.S. identify as lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, intersex\, or another LGBTQIA+ identity. Despite this\, there are numerous health and research needs that would most benefit the LGBTQIA+ aging community and those who support them. In this talk\, we will examine the unique risks and challenges LGBTQIA+ older adults face related to aging and Alzheimer’s disease\, addressing current research gaps and challenges within today’s sociopolitical climate. Drawing on lessons learned from our national research studies with LGBTQIA+ older adults\, we will discuss key insights and future directions. We will also highlight the importance of collecting sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data and why the historical and current political climate requires us to stand up for LGBTQIA+ aging communities and advocate for inclusive public health research.
