SUMMARY:Ending Cash Bail to Advance Community Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:Nearly 500\,000 legally innocent people in the U.S. are currently in pretrial detention. The inability to afford bail prevents many from being released from jail pretrial\, disproportionately impacting Black Americans and people living in poverty. Recent cash bail policies have been aimed at eliminating financial barriers to bail and reducing jail incarceration. This includes policies in New Jersey\, which in 2017 implemented one of the most comprehensive pieces of bail reform legislation to date. This presentation will discuss research aimed at providing advocates\, practitioners\, and policy makers across the U.S. with evidence about the community health effects of eliminating cash bail in order to equitably reduce pretrial detention in New Jersey and beyond.

SUMMARY:The Great East Japan Earthquake and Subsequent Health Survey in Fukushima\, Japan
DESCRIPTION:On March 11\, 2011\, Japan was hit by a massive earthquake\, the Great East Japan Earthquake. In Fukushima Prefecture\, 164\,865 residents (as of 2012) were forced to flee their homes and evacuate due to the earthquake and tsunami as well as the nuclear power plant accident. The earthquake\, tsunami\, nuclear accident\, and evacuation have taken a heavy toll on the health of the people of Fukushima Prefecture. For example\, in a survey using data from 330\,000-440\,000 people annually for specified health checkups conducted in Japan\, the prevalence of people with metabolic syndrome increased from 16.2% in 2010\, before the earthquake\, to 19.5% in 2012 and 20.4% in 2017\, and has not decreased since then. In the background\, there is thought to be a worsening of lifestyle habits\, and also\, cardiovascular diseases are increased. I will introduce these post-disaster health issues in Japan.

SUMMARY:An Effective mHealth Intervention to Close the Guideline-to-Practice Gap in Hypertension Treatment: mGlide RCT
DESCRIPTION:Of the estimated 86 million U.S. adults with hypertension\, 46% (~40 million) have poorly controlled or uncontrolled hypertension. Despite widespread recognition of the health risks of hypertension\, sub-optimal treatment of hypertension remains a pernicious problem and is marked by disparities. Rates of hypertension control are lower among racial and ethnic minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. A substantial guideline-to-practice gap exists in hypertension management. This gap may contribute to greater disparities in cardiovascular disease and its outcomes among minority and disadvantaged groups. A critical feature of hypertension control is self-care; strategies that support greater self-care and hypertension control among vulnerable and high-risk patients are an important component of addressing the disparities in hypertension care. We will present results from the mGlide RCT a randomized controlled trial that will evaluate whether a mobile health technology based active partnership between health care teams and patients results in better hypertension control than a state-of-clinical care comparison for stroke survivors and persons at high risk of cardiovascular disease.

SUMMARY:CHAI Speaker Series: Paid Care and Supporting Diverse Older Adults and their Family Care Partners
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nMany older adults with disabilities in the community rely on paid care\, such as home and community-based services\, provided by direct care workers like home care aides and personal care attendants. The quality and delivery of this care can vary significantly\, particularly for racial and ethnic minority older adults and those with complex conditions such as dementia. This presentation will explore the implications of paid care delivery for older adults from diverse backgrounds living with disabilities\, their family care partners\, and the direct care workers who support them in the community. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the event.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We are excited to host guests for this hybrid event and encourage individuals to attend in person. After the presentation and Q&A\, there will be a reception from 4:00 – 6:00 PM for all attendees. This free event promises to be a wonderful opportunity to connect and learn from Dr. Fabius and CHAI members.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]If you’d like to attend the event virtually please register using this form.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
