SUMMARY:BHDS Seminar with Lifeng Lin
DESCRIPTION:Title: Monitoring Living Evidence for Research Synthesis \nAbstract: A living systematic review (LSR) is an innovative approach that continuously updates and synthesizes evidence in real time. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) is a key tool in LSRs\, crucial for evaluating the conclusiveness of evidence. It employs sequential monitoring boundaries to assess intervention effectiveness and futility boundaries to determine whether an intervention shows a significant difference from or a similar effect to the control. Although TSA is becoming increasingly popular\, its reproducibility is often compromised by a lack of detailed information on underlying assumptions. Moreover\, existing TSA methods are challenged by their heavy reliance on interim analyses from randomized controlled trials\, which typically involve more homogeneous participant groups than those found in meta-analyses. In this presentation\, we will introduce novel methods aimed at preventing the premature termination of LSRs\, thereby strengthening the robustness of evidence synthesis. Our numerical studies indicate that these new methods provide greater reliability compared to existing approaches.

SUMMARY:The Minneapolis Reckoning: Race\, Violence\, and the Politics of Policing in America
DESCRIPTION:The eruption of Black Lives Matter protests against police violence in 2014 spurred a wave of police reform across the country. One of the places to embrace this reform was Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, a city long known for its liberal politics. Yet in May 2020\, four of its officers murdered George Floyd. Fiery protests followed\, making the city a national emblem for the failures of police reform. In response\, members of the Minneapolis City Council pledged to “end” the Minneapolis Police Department. Yet the politics of transforming policing were more complex than they first appeared. The Minneapolis Reckoning shows how the dualized meaning of the police—as both the promise of state protection and the threat of state violence—creates the complex politics of policing that thwart change and reinforce racial inequities. In The Minneapolis Reckoning\, Michelle Phelps describes how Minneapolis seemingly arrived at the brink of police abolition and the tangible ways in which public safety has changed since then. Her account of the city’s struggles over what constitutes real accountability\, justice\, and safety offers a vivid picture of the possibilities and limits of challenging police power.

SUMMARY:Introduction to New Centers at the SPH
DESCRIPTION:New Centers at the SPH: \n\nCannabis Research Center (CRC)\nMidwest Analytics and Disease Modeling Center (MADMC)\nPrevention Research Center (PRC)\n\nThe University of Minnesota School of Public Health Cannabis Research Center (CRC) strives to understand the public health implications of cannabis legalization and be a trusted source of information to guide policy and practice related to cannabis use in Minnesota. To accomplish this\, the CRC: \n\nConducts timely and Minnesota-specific research\nStudies issues pertaining to equity\nProvides interpretation and contextualization\nCollaborates\, trains and supports future practitioners and scholars\n\nThe Midwest Analytics and Disease Modeling Center (MADMC) is one of 13 centers across the United States funded by the CDC to build modeling and analytic capacity in health departments across the country. MADMC is a partnership between the University of Minnesota\, Minnesota Department of Health\, and Minnesota Electronic Health Records Consortium. Our goal is to provide public health agencies and health systems with data-driven\, actionable insights into decision alternatives during public health emergencies. \nThe University of Minnesota Prevention Research Center (PRC) will focus on research\, training\, and interventions that improve nutrition\, physical activity\, and wellness among children most at risk for weight-related health issues from households with lower incomes and from historically underserved communities. In its newest 5 year-round of CDC funding beginning October 2024\, the primary goals of the center will be to develop and disseminate actionable knowledge\, enhance community and cross-sector collaboration\, build infrastructure\, and expand training for healthy weight promotion in children and their families. The UMN PRC is one of 20 academic research centers across the country conducting community-based applied public health research to address chronic diseases and other leading causes of death and disability in the US.

SUMMARY:HPM Seminar with John Mulcahy
DESCRIPTION:Title: Provider Adoption of Cognitive Assessment and Care Planning Services and Associated Outcomes for People Living with Dementia \nOver 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD)\, and many will require long-term services and supports at some point. Planning for caregiving needs can help prevent acute health events and delay institutional care. CMS introduced a CPT code for “cognitive assessment and care planning” (CACP) in 2017 to incentivize clinicians to provide comprehensive care planning visits to patients showing signs of cognitive impairment; however\, adoption of this service has been very low with less than 1 percent of Medicare beneficiaries with an ADRD diagnosis receiving CACP in the first two years after it was introduced. This research explores the drivers of this low adoption rate\, and if patients who receive CACP experience better health outcomes.

SUMMARY:BHDS Seminar with Julia Wrobel
DESCRIPTION:Modeling Trajectories Using Functional Linear Differential Equations \nWe are motivated by a study that seeks to better understand the dynamic relationship between muscle activation and paw position during locomotion. For each gait cycle in this experiment\, activation in the biceps and triceps is measured continuously and in parallel with paw position as a mouse trotted on a treadmill. We propose an innovative general regression method that draws from both ordinary differential equations and functional data analysis to model the relationship between these functional inputs and responses as a dynamical system that evolves over time. Specifically\, our model addresses gaps in both literatures and borrows strength across curves estimating ODE parameters across all curves simultaneously rather than separately modeling each functional observation. Our approach compares favorably to related functional data methods in simulations and in cross-validated predictive accuracy of paw position in the gait data. In the analysis of the gait cycles\, we find that paw speed and position are dynamically influenced by inputs from the biceps and triceps muscles\, and that the effect of muscle activation persists beyond the activation itself. \nA seminar tea will be held at 2:45 p.m. in University Office Plaza\, Room 240. All are Welcome.
