What should I include in my statement of intent? How many words?

We recommend a 1-2 page discussion of

  • Information about yourself
  • Your interest in the Minnesota MHA Program
  • What you hope to accomplish by completing the program
  • Career plans and goals for the future
  • Your insight/perception of the program, the field of healthcare administration
  • Your involvement with the field (work, volunteer, or other exposures to healthcare administration)
  • An explanation of any issues or problems we should be aware of.

How can I prepare for the interview?

Study current issues in healthcare, especially healthcare reform. Read up on current issues. Know the difference between management and leadership.

What scholarship opportunities exist for international students?

We offer limited scholarships to international students. International students are encouraged to seek opportunities through International Student & Scholar Services

Do you guarantee a fellowship at graduation?

We do not guarantee a fellowship at graduation; however, 100% of domestic students seeking fellowships and jobs in the past 25 years have secured positions. The program provides professional leadership development that includes resume building, mock interviews, and professional coaching and feedback. The program actively cultivates fellowship opportunities through an alumni network and relationships with local and national healthcare organizations.

My GPA is lower than 3.0. What can I do to build my application? Realistically, do I have a chance?

The program evaluates each application from a holistic perspective, taking into consideration test scores, academic performance, leadership potential and letters of recommendation. All applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Stephanie Hagel at shagel@umn.edu.

How many students have prior work experience? How important is work experience?

Most students do not have full-time healthcare management experience. However, exposure to the field is important. All students have gained exposure through part-time work, volunteering, shadowing, and meeting with a healthcare executive or program alumnus. Approximately 20% of students have prior work experience in healthcare administration.

How many credit hours are required per semester?

Students take between 16 and 18 credits per semester.

Do you offer a dual MHA/MBA degree?

Yes, we offer a three-year dual degree option in collaboration with the Carlson School of Management. Learn more

Can I work while completing the program?

The program is time and teamwork intense, requiring homework and group work throughout the week. We recommend students work no more than 10 hours per week.
