Instructions for International Applicants

Did you attend a post-secondary institution outside of the U.S. or Canada (English-speaking)?

Additional Application Documentation:

In addition to the application requirements found on our Applying web page, applicants who attended a post-secondary institution outside of the U.S. or Canada (English speaking) must provide the following additional documentation:

  • A World Education Services (WES) ICAP course-by-course evaluation of your foreign academic credentials.
    • Your WES evaluation must be sent to SOPHAS. Go to wes.org/sophas for complete information and instructions.
    • We recommend that you start your WES at least 2 months prior to the application deadline.
  • Proof of English Proficiency with one of the following:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores
      • Scores should be sent to SOPHAS – DI Code: 5688
      • Preferred minimum score: 100
      • Scores must be less than 2 years old
    • International English Language Testing scores
      • Scores should be sent to University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (School of Public Health)
      • Preferred minimum score: 7.0
      • Scores must be less than 2 years old
    • Completion of 16-semester credits/ 24-quarter credits (within the past 24 months) in an academic program at an accredited institution of higher learning in the U.S. or Canada (English-speaking).
    • An Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate – upload a copy in the program specific document section of your SOPHAS application.
    • Note: Applicants who attended a university in which the language of instruction is English are exempt from providing TOEFL or IELTS scores.

WES Exceptions:

  • Applicants to the Clinical Research MS, Executive MHA, Executive PHAP MPH, or Executive Public Health Practice MPH programs who are physicians with a foreign medical degree and are licensed to practice medicine in the U.S., may instead have their FCVS evaluation sent directly to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health at:

  • Applicants to the Biostatistics Ph.D. program may instead send copies of their transcripts and degree conferral directly to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health at:

If you are admitted to the Biostatistics PhD program, you will, upon matriculation, be required to provide a WES ICAP document-by-document evaluation of your academic credentials directly to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

  • U.S. applicants who have attended post-secondary institutions outside of the U.S. as part of a study-abroad program at a U.S. or Canadian college/university, do not need to provide a WES evaluation of their foreign coursework as long as it is noted on their U.S. or Canadian transcript.
